GRAD SCHOOL WOES I HAZ THEM TOO bc everyone who studies what I want is not teaching, dead, or relocating to Singapore. LET’S DRINK ABOUT IT.

I THINK THIS IS A GOOD PLAN. I LIKE THIS PLAN. You, me, drunken commiseration. It’s a date.

We could even make it a drinking game!

Drink every time you are disappointed by a program you thought would be awesome.

Drink every time language requirements make you want to cry.

Drink every time “nobody studies X history? For reals?”

Drink every time you’ve been staring at grad school websites for so long you get a migraine.

Yes. Yes. and Yes. Let’s do thisssssss.

August 8, 2013

I wasn’t tagged, but I tagged them, which means I get to answer their questions. Right? Right.

Aly’s questions:

  1. What is your favorite swear word?
  2. What is one bad habit that can drive you to homicide?
People who can’t figure out the basic tasks of driving such as turns and speed limits.
  3. What’s the most inane summer job you’ve ever had?
Working at Chuck E. Cheese’s. Ugh.
  4. Straw fedora: fabulous, hipster, or hopeless?
Hopeless 99% of the time. Fabulous that rare 1%.
  5. The most embarrassing song on your favorite playlist is:
Come and Get It by Selena Gomez…
  6. Describe your clothing style in one sentence.
I wear a lot of plain colored pieces paired with something inevitably blue, grey or black and there are usually layers.
  7. What was the last book you couldn’t finish?
Snow by Orhan Pamuk and The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie :/
  8. The best movie you’ve seen all summer is:
I haven’t really seen any. Like, at all. I rewatched The Hobbit?
  9. What kitschy touristy item do you always have to pick up when you go on vacation?
MAGNETS. They are super easy to pack to take home. Also postcards to decorate with.
  10. If there is a heaven, what would you like God to say to you when you arrive at the pearly gates?
"So what do you think?" OR "Glad you could make it."
  11. Referencing the above question, what do you think would be said?
"I don’t know why you couldn’t just pick a side."

Tess’s questions!

  1. What is your favorite memory from being outdoors?
The finish line of any half marathon. Because the runner’s high and the hours of sunshine are great.
  2. What is the last movie you saw in theaters?
The Great Gatsby. I almost never see movies in theaters, since I hardly watch movies anyway.
  3. You can only listen to one musical artist/composer/performer for the rest of your life, but that creator will be constantly producing new material. Who do you pick to listen to?
…. uh… Bruce Peninsula maybe; they make amazing stuff and I could listen to their 2 albums on repeat forever, and new stuff would just be a cherry on top.
  4. Have you ever cried reading a book? If so, which book? If no, what book got you the closest to tears?
Yes! Where the Red Fern Grows and The Fault in Our Stars (like… 1.5 days ago) and Looking for Alaska.
  5. Do you bite your nails?
  6. What in your life are you most proud of? (Award, talent, task, friendship/relationship, project, physical feat, glorious physical attribute, innate ability, personal emotional strength, resisting being a huge buttnugget, ANYTHING)
    1. Running half marathons. 2. Writing a thesis. 3. Being able to touch my toes all the time without stretching
  7. When was the last time you brushed your hair?
Yesterday. Today I was lazy and just bunned it.
  8. What’s your favorite breakfast food?
Bagels with cream cheese. Also not-super-greasy sausage + eggs. Not all at once is necessary though.
  9. What’s something that you’ve got completely memorized? (Favorite song lyrics, a sonnet, the voicemail message on your best friend’s phone, the national anthem, anything.)
Tons of lyrics; most Civil Wars lyrics, FOB lyrics from the albums I actually like. I’m totally shit at literary quotes, and I can’t memorize non-musical things worth a shit BESIDES THE PRESIDENTS; I’VE MEMORIZED ALL THOSE OLD WHITE (AND ONE YOUNGISH BLACK) GUYS!
  10. What color are your bedsheets?
Purple! Also it’s a futon cover. I lack bedsheets since I sleep on a futon.
  11. You want a chocolate milkshake. Do you use chocolate ice cream, or vanilla with chocolate syrup?
Chocolate ice cream, though I’ve never done it; that just seems more cost effective and more efficient.

I’ve been tagged!

  • Always post the rules.
  • Answer the questions of the person who tagged you and write 11 new ones.
  • Tag 11 new people and link them to the post.
  • Let them know you’ve tagged them.

Kate’s questions:

1. Has a movie ever changed your life? Which one?
Probably Lord of the Rings. I used to watch crap before I saw those movies in middle school, but after seeing what a decent movie looked like, it raised my standards. Plus those movies are just awesome.

2. What is your daily hair routine?
Wash it. Maybe blow dry it. If it parted well, straighten and hair spray it. If not, put it in a high-ish, messy bun so people can’t tell it looks like ass.

3. Favourite alcoholic beverage? (If you don’t drink, how come?)
Wheat beer. You can buy six for, like, $8 (when you’re picky and drink fancy-ish beer), and that’s enough to get a little girl like me sufficiently drunk.

4. How do you feel about Halloween?
I love it, but I have yet to have a “grown-up” successfully bar-hopping Halloween. Hoping to remedy that in the near future; I tried to do it last year but was too poor/the bars were too expensive for me to really get into it.

5. Do you believe in magic?
In a wishful, childhood nostalgic sort of way.

6. If you got sucked into the world of a fictional novel, which would you be happiest in?
The world of the Tana French books. I would be a detective (obviously) and have a complicated relationship with everyone I know and everything would be mysterious and dark and awesome.

7. What song turns you on the most - gets you in the mood- , if any?
Just One Yesterday by Fall Out Boy. There’s just one part that the vocals are so spine-tingling, I JUST CAN’T HELP IT.

8. How many places have you lived in your life?
Three states (Utah, Illinois, Iowa), 5 cities.

9. If someone invented a time machine, would you want to use it?
Hell yes. I want to know what the future would be like SO BAD.

10. What are your top 3 favourite movies.
Big Fish, Spirit of the Marathon, Beauty and the Beast

11. Who puts the glad in gladiator?

My questions!

  1.  What was the last book you read?
  2. What are your three favorite TV shows?
  3. What food could you eat every day for a year and never tire of? (You can eat other foods too, but MUST eat this one food at least once per day.)
  4. What is your favorite childhood memory?
  5. What was your least favorite class in high school?
  6. Unicorns or narwhals?
  7. What is one thing about life/humanity that you adamantly believe?
  8. If you could meet any celebrity, who would it be and what would you ask him/her?
  9. Where would you travel if you could go anywhere in the world right now?
  10. Where would you be vehemently opposed to going?
  11. What color is your shirt right now?

Questions I answered

1. If you could do anything for a living without having to worry about the money, what would it be?

I would go to school and learn all the things I wanted to and then also do lots of running and buy a lot of things on the internet and also take lots of naps and watch TV shows. Realistically.

2. Your house is on fire. I know, sad. You only have time to grab three things, and everyone in your house is already safely outside. What do you take with you?
MY COMPUTER. All of my things are on that baby.

3. If you could choose to be an animal for the rest of your life, would you do it? What would it be?
No. But if I had to, I’d be a cat. So people could feed me and pet me and I could take lots of naps and sneak-attack watch TV.

4. Who is your favorite fictional person?
ARYA STARK. She’s my baby.

5. What, to you, is the perfect weekend activity?
Drinking alone, watching TV alone. Also naps.

6. Would you rather, for the rest of your life, have someone do your laundry or someone to go grocery shopping for you (with your money)?
Grocery shopping. I like doing laundry (sort of), but it would be nice for someone to resist temptation for me at the grocery store.

7. Should you be doing something else right now? If so, what is it? Because I should definitely be doing something else right now.
Yes. Oh well. Should probably work on my seminar paper. But it’s not due for 3 more days.

8. What was your favorite recess activity?
Playing tag. Because I was a beast.

9. Off the top of your head, what is a book you would instantly recommend to anyone who’s asking?
Abarat by Clive Barker. It’s just fun.

10. Is there anyone in particular you have always wanted to meet? Who is it?
Leonardo DiCaprio. I just feel like he’d be really nice.

11. Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
Probably Algeria. Algeria is my answer to everything today (thanks, seminar paper!).

Sherlock would be a terrible Zelda companion.

Sherlock as Navi, the King of Red Lions, Midna, and Fi.

John as Link, Link, Link, and Link.

Can you lend me some academic motivation? I seem to have lost mine.

I found mine in the library. Check there? (Note: I am not in the library. I am refusing to start being motivated yet for the day.)

Voulez Vous, A Sherlock Fanfiction

John immediately knows Sherlock is engaged in doing something mysterious when he comes in and the detective isn’t destroying the flat. The sitting-room is as tidy as he left it, and there is no burning smell coming from the kitchen. Sherlock is on the sofa, in a relatively normal position, looking at some sheet music with a light smirk on his face. John is scared.

He clears his throat.

'Ah, John,' says Sherlock. At least, that's what John thinks he's saying. He swears that he sounds marginally different. Paranoia, he tells himself. Is it really so bad that Sherlock isn't blowing something up?

Should have just gone with his instinct.

'Tu as acheté du lait? Je l'ai tout utilisé. Je l'ai demandé à Madame Hudson mais elle n'a pas compris.'

French mood. Right. John sighs and rubs his temples. ‘I don’t speak French, Sherlock.’

I can’t remember who linked it on here, but I refound it because IT IS AMAZEBALLS.
